Over his 34 years at Intel, Giri has worked on or overseen the development of 1 EPROM technology and 15 generations of Flash memory; in the process driving Intel Flash memory to > 1 million-fold increase in density. The advancement in Flash memory density and cost has made many commonly available products today including cellphones and portable computing viable. Flash memory is also the basis of Solid State Drives (SSD) used in PCs and Datacenters. At Intel, the Non-volatile Memory Solutions Group is the fastest growing business segment with revenues over $3B in ’17.
Over the last 6 years his group at Intel developed 2 novel Non-volatile memory technologies: 3D NAND and 3D Xpoint. Intel recently announced the 1st commercially available 1 Tb Flash memory die as well as the 1st 4 bits/cell 3D NAND memory: landmarks in Flash memory history. His group also drove process development for a revolutionary new memory technology: 3DXPoint the 1st Storage Class Memory in history. 3DXPont provides much faster performance than Flash at an order of magnitude higher density than DRAMs while also maintaining non-volatility. Memory hierarchy in computing is being re-architected by Intel to take advantage of the unique cost/performance capability of 3DXPont technology.
